Lamine Yamal has been withdrawn from the Spain squad for their upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifying matches, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) confirmed on Tuesday. The 18-year-old Barcelona forward underwent a medical procedure to treat pubic discomfort, prompting his release from international duty.
According to the federation, the national team’s medical staff were surprised and concerned to learn on Monday that Yamal had undergone an invasive radiofrequency procedure earlier that same day. The RFEF noted that the team was only made aware of the details through a report received later that evening.
The procedure, which had not been communicated to the national team beforehand, carries a recommended recovery period of seven to 10 days. To ensure Yamal’s health, safety, and well-being, the federation decided to release him from the current squad.
Yamal has been managing a groin issue in recent weeks, which also forced him to miss Spain’s last round of qualifiers in October. Despite his absence, Spain currently leads Group E with a perfect record from four matches and remains on track to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, set to be held in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Spain will face Georgia on Saturday in Tbilisi before returning home to host Turkey in Seville on 18 November, with qualification still very much within reach.
