Lamine Yamal Says Nations League Semifinal Won’t Decide Ballon d’Or Winner

Posted : 02 June 2025

Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal has downplayed the idea that Thursday's Nations League semi-final against France will determine who wins this year’s Ballon d’Or. Spain will face off with France in Stuttgart, while Germany meets Portugal in the other semi-final. Yamal and France’s Ousmane Dembele have both had standout seasons, raising speculation that the golden ball could go to one of them when the award is presented in September.

When asked if the match could be a deciding factor in the Ballon d'Or race, Yamal responded critically, questioning the logic of such a viewpoint. Speaking to Cadena COPE, he said the award should go to the best overall player of the year, not just based on a single game. He confidently added that although he believes Spain will win, the award should still reflect season-long excellence, cheekily adding that he’d vote for himself.

The 17-year-old Yamal has had a stellar season with LaLiga, Spanish Cup, and Super Cup titles, while Dembele has lifted the Ligue 1, French Cup, and Champions League trophies. Dembele also boasts 35 goals in all competitions, compared to Yamal’s 19. The shortlist for the 2025 Ballon d’Or, which covers performances from 1 August to 31 July, will be announced in early August, with the ceremony set for 22 September.
