Lamine Yamal Headlines Spain’s 2026 World Cup Squad as Real Madrid Players Miss Out

Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has named his 2026 World Cup squad, with teenage sensation Lamine Yamal among the standout inclusions, while no Real Madrid players have been selected for the first time in tournament history.

The squad announcement also saw Arsenal midfielder Mikel Merino included after recovering from injury, marking his return following a foot fracture that had sidelined him since January.

Merino recently made his comeback as a substitute for Arsenal in their final Premier League match against Crystal Palace, and remains one of coach De la Fuente’s trusted midfield options.

Barcelona star Yamal, just 18, is expected to play a key role for Spain despite currently recovering from a hamstring injury that has kept him out since late April.

He is joined by several Barcelona teammates, including Pedri, Gavi, and goalkeeper Joan Garcia, as Spain continue to build around a strong core from the Catalan club.

Athletic Bilbao winger Nico Williams also earns a place in the squad after an inconsistent injury-hit season, following his influential role in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph.

Defensively, De la Fuente opted for Eric Garcia and Marc Pubill after strong domestic campaigns, leaving out Real Madrid-linked defender Dean Huijsen and Atletico Madrid’s Robin Le Normand.

The absence of Real Madrid players, including veteran Dani Carvajal, marks a historic moment, but De la Fuente insisted selections were based purely on form and fitness rather than club affiliation.

He emphasized that his focus remains on selecting players who can contribute to the national team, stressing unity and pride in representing Spain.

Spain will begin their World Cup campaign on June 15 against Cape Verde, before facing Saudi Arabia and Uruguay in Group H.
