Spain have received a major boost ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with head coach Luis de la Fuente confirming that young stars Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams are expected to be available for the team's opening match against Cape Verde on June 15.
The two wingers missed the closing stages of the club season due to hamstring injuries, raising concerns about their readiness for the tournament. However, their recovery has progressed well, and Spain remain confident that both players will be fit in time for the opening fixture.
Another attacking option, Victor Munoz, is also expected to recover in time for the match. The trio remained at Spain's training base in the United States rather than travelling to Mexico for Monday's friendly against Peru, following advice from the team's medical and fitness staff.
De la Fuente explained that the decision was taken to prioritise their rehabilitation and ensure they are fully prepared for the start of the tournament. He expressed optimism about their progress, stating that all three players are responding positively to treatment and are on track to return soon.
The potential availability of Yamal and Williams is particularly significant for Spain, who enter the tournament as one of the favourites following their recent success as European champions. Yamal, still only 18, is widely regarded as one of football's brightest young talents and is expected to play a key role in Spain's campaign.
Spain will begin their World Cup journey against Cape Verde in Atlanta before remaining in the city to face Saudi Arabia in their second group-stage match. Their final Group-stage fixture will be against Uruguay in Guadalajara as they seek to secure a place in the knockout rounds.
