Lagos Walking Football League Enters Decisive Phase with Matchday 6

The Lagos Walking Football League (LWFL) will return on Saturday with Matchday 6 of Season 4, as teams battle for crucial points at the Eagle Club pitch, Surulere.

The matches are scheduled to begin at 9:00 a.m., with four fixtures lined up as the competition enters a decisive stage.

Ralph Alphonsos, Media Consultant to the league, disclosed that the opening match would see First Waka A, the champions in 2022 and 2023 and Season 2 finalists, face Managers.

According to him, the fixture is a repeat of the maiden league final in Season 1, when both teams finished with 12 points each before First Waka A emerged champions on goal difference.

He said Managers later ended First Waka A's dominance by claiming the league title last season.

Alphonsos said the second fixture would feature Waka Ladies against Naija Gunners in the women's and mixed category.

He added that Apapa Ajegunle would face Great Legends in the third game as the league continued to expand its participation across different categories.

The media consultant said the final fixture between First Waka B and FFC would be one of the day's major attractions.

He said First Waka B would enter the encounter as the league leaders after securing maximum points from their opening five matches.

“First Waka B enters Matchday 6 as the team to beat. Unbeaten and sitting top of the standings with a maximum 15 points from five games, they have been a defensive fortress, remarkably yet to concede a single goal this season,” he said.

Alphonsos said FFC would be seeking a positive result to improve its position in the lower half of the standings.

He said the league's development from four teams at its inception to the current season featuring men's, women's and corporate participation reflected the growing popularity of walking football in Lagos.

Godson Uti, head of the Lagos Waka Football Association, expressed satisfaction with the progress and organisation of Season 4.

“I am very happy with the progress of the league in Season 4,” Uti said.

He said the turnout, discipline and competitive spirit displayed by participating teams had been encouraging.

“The turnout, the discipline on the pitch, and the competitive spirit have been fantastic. We are definitely looking forward to bigger things ahead,” he said.

Uti said the league's growth demonstrated that football could remain a platform for participation and competition regardless of age.

The organisers said Matchday 6 would provide another opportunity for teams to strengthen their positions as the race for the Season 4 title gathers momentum.
