Lagos Set for Historic Reunion as 1994 and 1996 Super Eagles Face African Legends

Posted : 07 November 2026

Lagos is preparing for a historic football reunion as members of Nigeria’s celebrated 1994 and 1996 Super Eagles generations prepare to face some of Africa’s biggest football legends in an exhibition match on Sunday, November 8.

The Legends Football Game will take place at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, bringing together former Nigerian internationals and distinguished African football stars to celebrate three decades of Nigeria’s remarkable achievements in international football.

The event will honour the Super Eagles team that won the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Tunisia and represented Nigeria at its first FIFA World Cup in the United States. It will also celebrate the historic 1996 Atlanta Olympic squad that defeated Brazil and Argentina to claim Nigeria’s first Olympic football gold medal.

Among the Nigerian legends expected to feature are Daniel Amokachi, Austin Jay-Jay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, Garba Lawal, Ben Iroha, Victor Ikpeba, Austin Eguavoen, Alloy Agu, Mutiu Adepoju, Finidi George and Taribo West.

They will face an impressive African Legends selection featuring former African Footballer of the Year Emmanuel Adebayor, Senegalese star El-Hadji Diouf, former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah, Ivorian international Didier Zokora and Cameroonian greats Rigobert Song and Alexandre Song.

Other expected participants include Ghana’s John Paintsil and Anthony Baffoe, Senegal’s Khalilou Fadiga, Zimbabwe’s Peter Ndlovu and Benjani Mwaruwari, and South Africa’s Brian Baloyi.

Organisers say the reunion will provide an opportunity to celebrate the achievements of players whose performances helped establish Nigeria and Africa as major forces in international football.

The event is presented by Toptier Sports Management in collaboration with the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and its Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) programme. It forms part of CANEX WKND 2026, Afreximbank’s flagship initiative promoting Africa’s creative and cultural industries.

Beyond the main fixture, the programme will include music performances, cultural displays and appearances by the Loud Urban Choir. Organisers have also scheduled a football development camp involving 500 young players, giving them an opportunity to interact with some of the continent’s most celebrated former internationals.

The participating legends arrived in Lagos on Friday, November 6, ahead of the scheduled activities, including a professional photoshoot and other promotional engagements.

The match-day programme will begin before the 5:00 p.m. kick-off, with stadium gates expected to open at 1:30 p.m. A special recognition ceremony will follow the match to honour members of Nigeria’s historic 1994 and 1996 football generations.

Fans unable to attend the event can also follow the action live on the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), African Independent Television (AIT) and Silverbird Television between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m.

The National Sports Commission has also endorsed the initiative, describing it as an opportunity to recognise former players whose achievements brought international recognition to Nigeria.

The reunion is expected to attract football supporters eager to celebrate the country's golden generation while reconnecting with the African stars who helped shape the continent's football history.
