Lagos MiniFootball League Lifts Nigeria to Seventh in Africa

Nigeria have climbed 10 places to seventh in Africa in the latest rankings released by the Africa MiniFootball Confederation (AMC), following the commencement of the inaugural Lagos MiniFootball League.

The country moved from 17th to seventh after earning 100 additional points to take its overall tally to 334 points, with the development attributed largely to increased domestic activities generated by the Lagos league.

The competition, hosted by Agege Local Government and organised by the Lagos MiniFootball Association (LMA) under the supervision of the Nigeria MiniFootball Association (NMA), has provided a major platform for the growth and promotion of the sport in the country.

The increased activity has also attracted the attention of the Africa MiniFootball Confederation (AMC) and the World MiniFootball Federation (WMF), further raising Nigeria’s profile on the international MiniFootball scene.

NMA President Datti Umar Yusuf described the latest ranking as a major boost for the development of the sport, commending the Chairman of Agege Local Government Area and LMA, Hon. Abdul-Ganiyu Vinod Obasa, for introducing the Lagos MiniFootball League into the association’s calendar.

Yusuf also praised Obasa’s investment in MiniFootball facilities in schools, describing the initiative as an important tool for grassroots development and socio-cultural transformation.

“This is cheering news from the Africa MiniFootball Confederation. Nigeria has moved from 17th to seventh in the latest rankings by the AMC, and this has been made possible by the efforts of our Lagos MiniFootball Association Chairman, Hon. Abdul-Ganiyu Vinod Obasa, for bringing the Lagos MiniFootball League,” Yusuf said.

He added that the growing popularity of the competition had attracted more people to the sport, while the attention from the AMC and WMF demonstrated the international significance of the league.

Beyond its impact on Nigeria’s ranking, the Lagos MiniFootball League will serve as a talent identification platform for the selection of players for the national teams.

Players will have the opportunity to stake their claims for places in Nigeria’s squads for the Women’s Nations MiniFootball Cup in Cameroon in September and the Men’s AMC MiniFootball Nations Cup scheduled for Conakry, Guinea, in January 2027.

Nigeria have been drawn in Group C of the men’s competition alongside Mauritania, The Gambia and Uganda.

The development is expected to further strengthen the domestic MiniFootball structure while providing a pathway for talented players to progress from grassroots competition to the international stage.

The improved continental ranking reflects the positive impact of sustained domestic competitions and reinforces Nigeria’s ambition to become one of Africa’s leading MiniFootball nations.
