The Chairman of the Lagos State Football Association (LSFA), Hajji Gafar, has reaffirmed the association's commitment to investing in women's football following the successful conclusion of the maiden Lagos Queens Cup at the Legacy Pitch in Surulere.
The tournament concluded on a high note on Saturday, with FC Robo Queens crowned champions after defeating Ayisat Yusuf FA 4-2 on penalties following a goalless draw in a fiercely contested final.
Both teams created several scoring opportunities during regulation time but were unable to break the deadlock.
FC Robo Queens came closest to opening the scoring in the 16th minute when Mariam Yahaya's effort struck the woodwork. Ayisat Yusuf FA also came close after Awawu Iyanda rounded goalkeeper Mercy Olodu, only for the Robo defence to recover and clear the danger.
Earlier, FA Victory Queens secured third place with a 1-0 victory over CATS Ladies. Olaronke Ola scored the decisive goal in the 28th minute from a well-weighted assist by Chidera Isaiah, taking her tally to three goals in the competition.
The tournament also attracted notable international scouts, including Faith Ikidi-Michael, Maiju Ruotsalainen, Marko Saranlinna and James Burgin, who monitored players with a view to identifying talents for future opportunities.
Speaking after the final, Gafar expressed satisfaction with the quality of football on display throughout the competition and pledged that the LSFA would continue creating platforms to accelerate the growth of the women's game.
"As an association, we will not stop here. We will invest more in women's football because this is where the future is.
"We need to create more platforms like this so that our girls can be seen, be scouted and get the opportunities they deserve," he said.
Gafar also commended the organisations and individuals whose support made the competition possible, describing the tournament as the result of effective collaboration.
He acknowledged the contributions of 36 Lion Investment, Herizon Sports Initiative, Ayisat Yusuf Football Foundation, Diego Nakamura, Ivory Health Club, Africa Football Empowerment Congress and other partners for their commitment to promoting the development of the girl child through football.
The successful staging of the inaugural Lagos Queens Cup provided a valuable platform for emerging players to showcase their abilities to local and international scouts while reinforcing the growing momentum behind women's football development in Nigeria.
