Lagos is set to become the centre of African football nostalgia on Sunday as former Super Eagles stars Austin Jay-Jay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu and Daniel Amokachi lead a galaxy of football legends for the Legends Football Game at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan.
With just three days to the much-anticipated encounter, excitement is building around the reunion, which will bring together some of the continent's most celebrated football personalities for a historic celebration of African football heritage.
The Nigerian contingent will feature several members of the iconic 1994 Africa Cup of Nations-winning squad and the 1996 Olympic gold medal-winning team, including Mutiu Adepoju, Finidi George, Taribo West, Samson Siasia, Victor Ikpeba, Alloy Agu and Garba Lawal.
They will face an equally formidable African Legends selection featuring former Togo captain Emmanuel Adebayor, Senegal's El-Hadji Diouf, Ghanaian great Stephen Appiah, Didier Zokora, Rigobert Song, Alexandre Song, Peter Ndlovu, Benjani Mwaruwari and Khalilou Fadiga.
Beyond the star attraction, the reunion is designed to celebrate two defining milestones in Nigerian football history: the 1994 AFCON triumph in Tunisia and the historic Olympic football gold medal won at Atlanta 1996.
Nigeria's 1994 generation established its continental supremacy before making the country's maiden appearance at the FIFA World Cup in the United States, where the Super Eagles reached the Round of 16.
The team further cemented its place in history two years later in Atlanta, becoming the first African nation to win Olympic men's football gold after memorable victories over Brazil and Argentina in the knockout stages.
The event, presented by Toptier Sports Management in collaboration with the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and its Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) programme, will also showcase the intersection of football, entertainment and African culture.
Meanwhile, ValueJet has been announced as the Official Airline Partner, while Team 33 Production will serve as the event's Production Partner, supporting the logistics and broadcast production of the celebration.
Other sponsors and partners include Bet9ja, Silverbird and Africa Independent Television (AIT), whose involvement further strengthens the commercial backing for the gathering.
Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Toptier Sports Management, Chichi Nwoko, said the initiative provides an opportunity to recognise football heroes whose achievements continue to inspire younger generations.
The reunion will also extend beyond the pitch, with a mini football camp expected to engage 500 children as part of efforts to inspire grassroots participation and connect emerging talents with the game's celebrated figures.
Music, dance and cultural performances will complement the football spectacle, while a special ceremony will honour members of the historic 1994 and 1996 generations after the match.
The Legends Football Game forms part of CANEX WKND 2026, Afreximbank's flagship platform promoting Africa's creative and cultural industries, while highlighting the commercial opportunities within the continent's sports sector.
With some of Africa's most recognisable football names converging on Lagos, Sunday's encounter promises more than a reunion of former players. It will provide an opportunity to celebrate a golden era, honour enduring legacies and inspire the next generation to pursue similar heights.
The combination of legendary football personalities, cultural performances and grassroots development activities is expected to make the occasion a memorable celebration of African football. It will also provide an opportunity to reconnect generations of supporters with the players who helped shape Nigeria's and the continent's football history.
