LA 2028 Olympics Qualifiers: Nigeria, Kenya and Angola Advance to Third Round

Posted : 14 October 2026

Nigeria's Super Falcons have secured a place in the third round of the African qualifying series for the women's football tournament at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. Kenya and Angola have also progressed after impressive performances in their second-round ties.

The Super Falcons booked their place with a commanding 7-0 aggregate victory over Comoros. Nigeria won the first leg 2-0 before recording a convincing 5-0 victory in the return match at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State, on Tuesday.

The result underlined Nigeria's strength as Africa's most successful women's national team, with 10 Women's Africa Cup of Nations titles. The team will now face Morocco in the third round as both countries pursue one of the continent's two available Olympic qualification places.

Morocco had already secured progression after Congo withdrew from the qualifying competition. Cameroon also advanced following Guinea's withdrawal, reducing the number of teams required to complete the second-round fixtures.

Kenya produced one of the most emphatic performances of the round, defeating Seychelles 11-0 in each leg to advance with a remarkable 22-0 aggregate score. The result highlighted the gap between the two sides and secured Kenya's progression to the next stage.

Angola also advanced after defeating Namibia 2-0 in the return leg. The teams had played out a goalless draw in the first encounter, leaving Angola to secure qualification with a decisive performance in the second match.

Several other countries entered their return fixtures with advantages from their opening matches. South Africa held a 4-0 lead over Madagascar, while Algeria enjoyed an 8-0 advantage against the Central African Republic.

Côte d'Ivoire also strengthened its position with a 4-1 first-leg victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo. Ghana defeated Mauritius 3-0, while Senegal secured a narrow 1-0 advantage over Tunisia.

Malawi recorded a 2-0 win against Zimbabwe, and Burkina Faso defeated Equatorial Guinea 3-1. Benin also established a two-goal advantage after beating Mali 3-1. Meanwhile, Zambia faced a difficult task after losing 2-1 to Uganda in the opening leg.

The African qualifying competition features 35 national teams competing through five knockout rounds for two places at the 2028 Olympic women's football tournament.

The third round is scheduled for February 23 to March 6, 2027. The fourth round will take place in October 2027, while the final qualifying round is scheduled for November 23 to December 4, 2027.

The two successful African nations will represent the continent at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, scheduled for July 11-29, 2028. Nigeria's next challenge against Morocco will be an important step in the Super Falcons' bid to return to the Olympic football tournament.
