Kylian Mbappe set to depart PSG as contract ends, Real Madrid emerges as frontrunner

Reports from Europe's top journalists are indicating that Kylian Mbappe has communicated his decision to leave Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) at the end of the season when his contract expires. This revelation, shared with PSG's president, Nasser Al Khelaifi, implies that Mbappe will depart without a transfer fee, making Real Madrid the favored destination for the French star.

 

While The Athletic previously mentioned Mbappe's inclination towards joining Real Madrid, there seems to be skepticism among those close to him regarding the Spanish club's offer, leading to delays in the decision-making process. Mbappe entered the final six months of his PSG contract on January 1, granting him the freedom to engage in discussions with other clubs.

 

The summer of 2022 witnessed Mbappe on the verge of a move to Real Madrid, yet he opted to sign a new contract with PSG at the last minute, initially reported to expire in 2024/25 but now clarified to conclude at the end of the current season. Despite reported interest from Real Madrid last summer and a substantial offer from Saudi Arabia's Al-Hilal, amounting to €700 million per season, Mbappe chose to reject both opportunities.

 

In the ongoing season, Mbappe has been prolific for PSG, making 30 appearances and scoring 31 goals. With PSG leading the French league by an 11-point margin, reaching the quarter-finals in the domestic cup, and advancing strongly in the Champions League, the star player seems set to leave the club at the pinnacle of success. Additionally, Mbappe's friend and fellow French national team member, Aurelien Tchouameni, who plays for Real Madrid, has stirred speculation on social media, posting emojis of popcorn buckets and igniting fervent reactions from fans.
