Kylian Mbappe Nears Goals Record as France Edge Brazil in High-Profile World Cup Warm-Up

Posted : 27 March 2026

Kylian Mbappe silenced any lingering concerns regarding his fitness by inspiring France to a 2-1 win over Brazil on Thursday night. The friendly encounter, held at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, served as a crucial tune-up for the upcoming 2026 World Cup. Playing in front of 66,215 fans, the Real Madrid forward showed great sharpness despite recently recovering from a left knee sprain.

The opening goal arrived in the 32nd minute when Ousmane Dembele threaded a perfect pass through the Brazilian defense. Mbappe latched onto the ball and expertly chipped the goalkeeper to give the French the lead. This strike moved him to 56 international goals, leaving him just one behind Olivier Giroud’s all-time French record.

France doubled their advantage in the 65th minute through Hugo Ekitike. The Liverpool striker, who has been in clinical form this season, converted a precise delivery from Michael Olise. However, the match was not without controversy for the Europeans. Defender Dayot Upamecano received a straight red card in the 55th minute following a VAR review for a professional foul.

Brazil looked to capitalize on their numerical advantage and managed to pull a goal back in the 78th minute. Bremer redirected a cross from Luiz Henrique past Mike Maignan to set up a tense finish. Despite the late pressure, the French backline held firm to secure a morale-boosting victory against their South American rivals.

The match also featured the debut of FIFA’s new mandatory "cooling break" rule. Even with mild New England temperatures of 15°C, play was paused mid-half for player hydration. This policy will be implemented across all matches during the 2026 World Cup to ensure player safety following previous heat-related concerns.

Off the pitch, the event marked a successful resolution to a financial dispute between Foxborough officials and tournament organizers. The town had previously raised concerns over $8 million in security costs, but a recent agreement allowed the match to proceed. The stadium had also undergone a significant transition, replacing its usual artificial turf with natural grass for the occasion.
