Kylian Mbappe Believes 2026 Could Be the Year He Wins Ballon d’Or

Kylian Mbappe believes it is natural for him to be considered a leading Ballon d’Or candidate after his record-breaking 2026 World Cup campaign. The Real Madrid forward said his performances this year have given him a strong case, although he accepts that the final decision rests with the voters.

The France captain scored 10 goals at the World Cup to claim the Golden Boot and helped his country finish fourth. His latest haul took his career World Cup total to 22 goals, making him the tournament’s all-time leading scorer. He is also the first player to win the World Cup Golden Boot twice.

Mbappe, who has yet to win the Ballon d’Or, said playing for Real Madrid naturally puts him in the conversation for major individual and team honours. He added that his historic World Cup campaign makes 2026 feel like a particularly strong opportunity, while acknowledging that journalists will ultimately decide the winner.

The 27-year-old has continued to produce impressive numbers since joining Real Madrid, but the Spanish giants have struggled to turn his goals into major silverware. Madrid are preparing to open their Champions League campaign against Inter Milan at the Santiago Bernabéu after suffering a 1-0 defeat to Real Betis in their most recent La Liga fixture.

Mbappe was also questioned about criticism of his defensive contribution and comparisons with Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembele and Barcelona attacker Raphinha. He admitted that Real Madrid still need to improve but rejected direct comparisons, arguing that each player has different responsibilities and qualities.

The forward also made clear that individual statistics and team success should not be viewed as competing objectives. While he would accept scoring fewer goals if it resulted in trophies, Mbappe insisted he wants to continue scoring heavily while helping Real Madrid win major titles.
