2025/2026 NPFL Match Day 29: Kwara United Boost Survival Hopes with Vital Victory in Katsina

Posted : 09 March 2026

Kwara United secured a vital away victory after defeating Katsina United 2–1 at the Mohammed Dikko Stadium in Katsina during Matchday 29 of the Nigeria Premier Football League on Sunday.

The hard-fought win earned the Harmony Boys an important three points as they continue their battle to maintain their top-flight status. The hosts took an early lead in the 20th minute through Nasir Ismail, putting pressure on the visitors. However, Kwara United showed resilience and determination to recover from the setback.

Their response came just five minutes later when Johnmark Aule restored parity in the 25th minute, tapping in a rebound from a free kick taken at the edge of the box. Katsina United mounted several attacking moves in search of another goal, but the defensive line of Abutu Jeremiah and Ogbonna Arinze, alongside goalkeeper Suraj Ayeleso, stood firm to ensure the score remained level at halftime. Aule also missed a chance to give the visitors the lead after directing his effort wide.

In the second half, Katsina United intensified their pressure with several attempts from different angles, but Ayeleso produced a series of brilliant saves to keep Kwara United in the game. The goalkeeper’s outstanding performance, which included eight saves, proved crucial in securing the victory.

Coach Ashifat Suleiman’s tactical substitutions later turned the tide for the visitors. Adeshina Gata, who came on for Abdulsalam Abdulsalam, sealed the win for Kwara United with a dramatic stoppage-time goal in the 90+2 minute — his first goal of the season. Other substitutions saw Shola Abdulraheem and Jimoh Gbadamosi replace Ini Emmanuel and Salisu Mustapha.

Speaking after the match, Coach Suleiman praised his players for their renewed commitment and resilience in the quest to maintain the club’s NPFL status, noting that their mission in Katsina to secure maximum points was successfully accomplished.

With the victory, Kwara United now have 32 points from 29 matches and will next host Rangers International in Abeokuta next Sunday.
