Kwara United Rue Missed Chances in Home Draw Against Abia Warriors

Posted : 18 October 2026

Kwara United squandered a chance to claim maximum points at home after playing out a 1-1 draw against Abia Warriors in their 2026/2027 EuroMatch Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 9 encounter on Saturday in Ilorin.

The Harmony Boys dominated key moments at the Rashidi Yekini Main Bowl of the George Innih Stadium but paid dearly for missed opportunities, including a second-half penalty that could have secured victory.

Kwara United threatened early in the 27th minute when Abdulsalam Abdulsalam and Thomas Omokhafe struck the crossbar in quick succession, leaving the hosts frustrated.

Their persistence eventually paid off seven minutes later when Ferinyaro Ali fired a superb free kick into the net to give the Ilorin side a deserved lead.

Abia Warriors, however, capitalised on a defensive lapse to draw level, with Emmanuel Nnaji punishing the hosts after an error left goalkeeper Suraj Ayeleso exposed.

The decisive moment came in the 64th minute when Stephen Gideon was brought down inside the penalty area by the visiting goalkeeper, earning Kwara United a spot kick.

Alao Mohammed stepped up but sent his effort against the crossbar, wasting a golden opportunity to restore the hosts’ advantage.

Both teams pushed for a winner in the closing stages, but neither could find the breakthrough as the contest ended in a draw, leaving Kwara United to reflect on their failure to convert promising chances.

Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, watched part of the second half from the stands as the hosts battled to regain the lead.

Despite the disappointing result, Ali earned the Cyteck Man of the Match award for his influential display, crowned by his well-taken free kick.

Kwara United head coach, Ashifat Sulyman, expressed disappointment with the outcome, highlighting the missed penalty and other scoring opportunities as major setbacks.

Sulyman said the technical crew would work on improving the team’s finishing to ensure better conversion of chances in subsequent fixtures.

He also apologised to the club’s supporters, urging them to remain patient and continue backing the team as the league campaign progresses.

Kwara United will seek to recover from the setback when they travel to Kano next weekend to face Barau FC in their Matchday 10 fixture.
