Kwara United Queens take break after promising debut season

Kwara United Queens Football Club have commenced a two-week break after completing an encouraging maiden season in the Nigeria Women’s Football League (NWFL) Nationwide competition.

The club will resume activities on Monday, Sept. 21, to begin preparations for the next phase of its development.

The decision was announced by the club’s Secretary, Mrs Mardiyyah Yusuf, on behalf of Chairman, Alhaji Abdulrazaq Owolabi Wopa, at a post-season meeting held at the club’s secretariat on Thursday, Sept. 3.

Wopa, while addressing the players and officials, praised the team for its commitment, discipline and dedication throughout the season, urging them to maintain the standards that have helped establish the club within a short period.

He also charged the players to remain disciplined during the break and continue to protect the image of the club.

The chairman expressed gratitude to the Kwara State Governor, Mallam AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, and the First Lady, Prof. Ambassador Olufolake AbdulRazaq, for their moral and financial support.

He also commended the Executive Chairman of the Kwara State Sports Commission, Mallam Bola Mogaji, for his contributions to the growth and development of the club.

Technical Consultant, Coach Paul Odeh, urged the players to shun activities capable of jeopardising their careers, performance and personal well-being while away from the club.

Established in February 2026, the Courageous Queens made significant progress in their first season.

They finished runners-up at the Kwara First Lady Pre-Season Championship before making their NWFL Nationwide debut in Aba, Abia, in August.

The team advanced to the semi-finals of the competition but narrowly missed promotion to the NWFL Championship after losing at the last-four stage.

They subsequently ended the campaign on a positive note, securing their first major silverware by defeating Model Queens 4-0 to win the YSFON POWA Cup.

With the maiden campaign now behind them, the club is expected to use the break to regroup before resuming on Sept. 21, with attention shifting to building on its impressive debut season.
