2025/2026 NPFL Matchday 16 Preview: Kwara United Brace for Tough North Central Derby Against Niger Tornadoes

Posted : 07 December 2025

Kwara United will return to the Rashidi Yekini Main Bowl in Ilorin on Sunday for a decisive North Central derby against Niger Tornadoes in their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Matchday 16 encounter.

The Harmony Boys are aiming for a strong response after their narrow and unfortunate 3–2 defeat to league debutants Barau FC at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.

Head Coach Ashifat Suleiman has described the mood in camp as “positive,” noting that the players have put the setback behind them and are fully focused on securing maximum points this weekend.

Sunday’s fixture also carries a revenge narrative, as Tornadoes completed a double over Kwara United last season — winning in Ilorin on opening day and repeating the feat in Minna.

The Ilorin-based side have received a significant squad boost ahead of the tie with the return of Gidado Toheeb and Olarewaju AbdulRahman, who are back after weeks on the sidelines due to injury.

However, Aliyu Salaudeen, Issa Gata, and Shola Abdulraheem remain unavailable as they continue their recovery.

Coach Suleiman has urged his players to show character and fight for victory against Tornadoes. He expressed confidence in the team’s preparation and their adherence to tactical instructions.

“Areas of loopholes have been corrected, and we are ready for a fierce North Central battle in our next game against Niger Tornadoes,” he assured.

Niger Tornadoes head into the fixture in strong league form, sitting comfortably on 23 points.

Kwara United, however, have dropped to 18 points from 15 matches and now occupy 14th position. While the point gap is narrow, the standings reflect the fine margins that separate consistency from lapses in performance in the NPFL.

With the league known for its intensity both on and off the pitch, every point is crucial — and Kwara United will be desperate to avoid losing further ground.

Supporters, fans, and stakeholders are expected to troop to the stadium in large numbers, as their vocal backing will be vital in pushing the Harmony Boys toward victory in the 4:00 pm kickoff.
