Kwara State Targets Fresh Talents as 700 Athletes Gear Up for State Sports Festival

Posted : 19 August 2026

Kwara State is set to embark on another major talent-discovery drive as about 700 athletes from the state’s 16 Local Government Areas prepare to compete in the 8th Kwara State Sports Festival.

The nine-day festival, scheduled for August 21 to 29, 2026, will be held at the George Agbazika Innih Stadium Complex in Ilorin, with athletes expected to battle for honours in 31 sporting events.

Ahead of the competition, the Kwara State Sports Commission on Tuesday unveiled the official logo and mascot for the festival, signalling the final phase of preparations for the multi-sport event.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony, Executive Chairman of the Commission and Chairman of the Main Organising Committee, Mallam Bola Mogaji, said the festival was designed to provide young athletes with opportunities to develop their talents and compete at a higher level.

Mogaji commended Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for supporting sports and youth development, while also appreciating the Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs and chairmen of the 16 LGAs for their contributions to the event.

He recalled that Kwara revived its state sports festival in 2000 as part of efforts to sustain a biennial competition and create a pathway for athletes to emerge from the grassroots.

According to him, some interruptions in subsequent editions were linked to the renovation and construction of sporting facilities at the stadium complex.

Mogaji added that beyond talent discovery, the festival would promote unity among residents, showcase Kwara’s sporting infrastructure and celebrate the cultural diversity of the state.

Also speaking, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, Dr Steve Olarinoye, said preparations were progressing steadily, with more than 60 per cent of arrangements already completed.

He disclosed that approximately 700 male and female athletes would participate, with each LGA allowed to field a maximum of 100 athletes across the 31 sports.

The festival is therefore expected to provide a major platform for grassroots athletes to showcase their abilities while competing for recognition across Kwara State.
