Kun Khalifat FC continued their impressive NPFL debut campaign with a remarkable 2–1 away win over Bayelsa United in Yenagoa.
NPFL debutants Kun Khalifat FC produced yet another stunning away victory after defeating Bayelsa United 2–1 in front of their home fans in Yenagoa.
The Imolites maintained the same spirited performance that earned them a surprise win over Enyimba International FC on Matchday 8, claiming another valuable three points — this time at the Samson Siasia Stadium.
The Matchday 9 encounter turned out to be one of the weekend’s biggest upsets, as Kun Khalifat stunned the former Federation Cup winners with an impressive display.
Uche Moses opened the scoring in the 54th minute before Michael Akano doubled the visitors’ lead in the 77th minute. Jawad Mustapha’s 62nd-minute penalty provided a brief lifeline for Bayelsa United, but it was not enough to prevent defeat.
After the match, Bayelsa United head coach Meremu Okara attributed his team’s loss to the poor state of the waterlogged pitch at the Samson Siasia Stadium, describing the defeat as “unfortunate.”
“It’s very difficult — this was not what we planned for. I think the wet nature of the pitch didn’t help matters,” Okara said.
“We just had to keep kicking the ball long. Aerially, they were stronger, and the difference was that they scored two goals while we scored one. It’s a bitter pill to swallow.”
The defeat saw Bayelsa United drop to 13th place on the NPFL table with 11 points, while Kun Khalifat FC continued to rise as one of the season’s biggest surprises.
