Kun Khalifat FC Clarify Ownership Situation After NPFL Sale Announcement

NPFL newcomers Kun Khalifat FC have clarified their ownership situation after the league management announced that the Owerri-based club was up for sale ahead of the 2026/27 season.

The NPFL had confirmed receiving correspondence from the club's management indicating that the majority shares were being transferred to a prospective buyer. The development raised questions about the future of the club just weeks before the new league campaign begins.

In a letter to the NPFL, Kun Khalifat chief executive officer Amaefula Michael said the club's shareholders were in the process of handing over majority shares to a prospective buyer. He asked the league body to begin the ownership transfer process while awaiting the completion of the transaction.

"On behalf of the shareholders of Kun Khalifat of Owerri, I hereby confirm that we are in the process of handing over the majority shares of the company to a prospective buyer. You will be duly informed when the process is concluded," Amaefula wrote.

The development comes after Kun Khalifat endured a difficult debut season in the Nigeria Premier Football League. The Owerri club faced financial challenges throughout the 2025/26 campaign but eventually avoided relegation on the final day of the season.

The NPFL subsequently warned that the club's ownership situation could have implications for the new campaign. The league body stated that if the proposed change of ownership was not completed before the August 28 start of the season, it might not approve a change of the club's name.

However, the situation took another turn later on Friday when Kun Khalifat moved to clarify the reports. Club president Rita Amaefula said the club had not been placed on an outright sale and insisted that the organisation was instead seeking additional investors.

The clarification means the immediate future of the club remains subject to further discussions between the existing stakeholders and prospective investors. It also leaves open the possibility of changes to the club's ownership structure without a complete takeover.

Kun Khalifat secured their NPFL status despite the financial difficulties that affected their first season in Nigeria's top flight. The club will now need to resolve the ownership and investment issues quickly as preparations for the 2026/27 campaign continue.

With the new NPFL season scheduled to begin on August 28, attention will remain on whether Kun Khalifat complete any ownership changes before the deadline and what impact the process could have on the club's participation in the top flight.
