Kompany Urges Bayern Munich to Overcome Pain Barrier Against Real Madrid

Posted : 14 April 2026

Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany has challenged his players to push beyond their limits as they prepare to face Real Madrid in the decisive second leg of their Champions League quarterfinal. Speaking on Tuesday, Kompany emphasized the importance of resilience and determination if Bayern are to secure a place in the semifinals.

The German side claimed a 2-1 victory in the first leg at the Santiago Bernabéu, putting them in a strong position ahead of the return fixture at home.

However, Kompany stressed that facing the 15-time European champions requires more than just a tactical advantage. He highlighted that while individual brilliance can decide such matches, collective intensity and the willingness to endure difficult moments are equally crucial.

Kompany noted that preparation, both mental and physical, will play a defining role. He added that maintaining a positive mindset and embracing the occasion are essential ingredients for success in high-pressure encounters of this magnitude.

Despite Bayern’s strong performance in Madrid, the coach admitted there was still room for improvement. He pointed out that although his team controlled large portions of the game, they relied on veteran goalkeeper Manuel Neuer to make several key saves. Kompany believes Bayern can elevate their performance further but insists that belief must now be matched by action on the pitch.

One standout performer from the first leg was Michael Olise, whose display drew praise from his manager. Kompany described the French winger as a player on the path to becoming one of the best, noting that he is already competing at a high level among Europe’s elite talents.

The former Manchester City captain has guided Bayern to the brink of a Champions League semifinal less than two years after experiencing relegation with Burnley in his first top-flight managerial season. Despite growing praise, Kompany remains grounded, dismissing both hype and criticism as distractions that can negatively impact performance.

He reiterated that success in coaching comes from consistency and focus rather than external opinions, warning against being swayed by fluctuating narratives in the media.

Kompany also took time to acknowledge a significant milestone in football, praising Marie-Louise Eta, who recently became the first woman to manage a men’s team in one of Europe’s top five leagues with Union Berlin.

He described the achievement as an important moment for the sport, highlighting its potential to inspire young girls to pursue coaching careers and believe in their ability to succeed at the highest level.
