Guardiola: Klopp’s Liverpool Posed Bigger Challenge Than Real Madrid .

Posted : 18 March 2026

Pep Guardiola has described Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool as the toughest opponent of his managerial career, even above Real Madrid, following Manchester City’s 5‑1 aggregate defeat to the Spanish side in the Champions League Round of 16. Vinícius Júnior netted twice in Manchester to secure a 2‑1 second-leg win, adding to Federico Valverde’s first-leg hat trick at the Bernabéu that gave Madrid a 3‑0 advantage.

This marks the third consecutive season City have been eliminated by the 15-time European champions. Despite the repeated setbacks, Guardiola insisted that Madrid have never been his greatest adversary. “No, my biggest challenge was Jürgen Klopp with Liverpool, in these years here,” he said. “You were in Spain, you didn’t realise what that competition was.”

Guardiola reflected on the progress of City over the past decade, noting how the club has evolved into a consistent European contender. “It's been a good learning experience for the club,” he said. “They’ve won, we’ve won. The numbers are similar; they’ve knocked us out more than we have them. But they know how we’ve played.”

Over his career, Guardiola has faced Madrid 30 times—first with Barcelona, then Bayern Munich, and most recently Manchester City—recording 14 wins, six draws, and ten losses. While Madrid have ousted City in 2022, 2024, 2025, and now 2026, Guardiola’s City did overcome the Spaniards in 2023 on the way to a historic treble.

Guardiola’s rivalry with Klopp has been intense and closely contested. In the Bundesliga, Guardiola won four of their eight meetings, with Klopp victorious in three, and one match ending in a draw. In the Premier League, Klopp holds a slight edge, winning eight, losing six, and drawing eight encounters. Yet, Guardiola’s trophy haul during their overlapping tenures at City far exceeds Klopp’s, with six titles compared to one.

Former Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold, now with Madrid, highlighted the significance of facing City. “It was nice to win here, to get one over on them,” he said. “They’ve snatched a lot of Premier League medals away from me and Liverpool. Our mentality was to come here and win.”

Looking ahead, Madrid will face either Bayern Munich or Atalanta in the quarterfinals, with Bayern leading 6‑1 from the first leg. Meanwhile, City turn their focus to the EFL Cup final against Arsenal this Sunday as they seek to regroup after their Champions League exit.
