Kevin De Bruyne Likely to Skip Club World Cup Amid Future Uncertainty

Posted : 18 May 2025

Kevin De Bruyne has indicated that he will "probably" not play for Manchester City in the upcoming Club World Cup to avoid the risk of injury, which could affect his chances of securing a new club. Although speculation suggested he might sign a short-term contract extension to participate in the tournament, De Bruyne’s uncertain future and contract situation have made him hesitant.

The 33-year-old, who will leave City after ten years at the club, stressed the importance of protecting himself, saying an injury during the tournament would leave him without support.

De Bruyne has been a key figure for Manchester City since joining in 2015, contributing to six Premier League titles and a Champions League victory. However, his last major appearance for the club ended in disappointment with a 1-0 loss to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final.

When asked about his future, the Belgium midfielder remains undecided but acknowledged he has been in talks with potential suitors. He also admitted that family considerations now play a major role in his decisions, making his next move more complex than when he was younger.

Despite the underwhelming season for City, falling short of their usual high standards, De Bruyne remains grateful for his achievements with the club. While Manchester City still have chances to qualify for next season's Champions League, De Bruyne reflected on the challenging campaign with acceptance and appreciation for the success he has enjoyed over the years. He has not ruled out the possibility of staying in the Premier League but remains open to other opportunities as he contemplates the next chapter of his career.
