Kelechi Iheanacho makes dream Bursaspor debut with goal and assist

Posted : 12 August 2026

Kelechi Iheanacho made an impressive start to life at Bursaspor by scoring and providing an assist in the club's 2-0 away victory over Bodrum FK. The Nigerian forward was named Man of the Match after helping the Turkish second-tier side open their 2026/27 campaign with three points.

Iheanacho opened the scoring before setting up Bursaspor's second goal. The result gave the Super Eagles forward an immediate impact at his new club and placed Bursaspor among the early leaders in the Trendyol 1. Lig.

The 29-year-old joined Bursaspor on a free transfer in July after leaving Celtic. The Turkish club confirmed his arrival on a three-year contract after his successful loan spell in Scotland.

Iheanacho scored nine goals in 24 appearances for Celtic last season. He also helped the Scottish club win the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup before departing at the end of the campaign.

The former Leicester City and Manchester City forward said he was delighted with his debut. He also acknowledged the difficulty of opening matches and expressed hope that his contribution would help Bursaspor achieve their targets.

Bursaspor's promotion ambition was a major reason behind Iheanacho's decision to move to Turkey. The club are targeting a return to the Turkish Super Lig and have also outlined ambitions to compete in European football.

The Nigerian striker said he wanted to prioritise the team's collective objective over personal achievements. His immediate target is to help Bursaspor secure promotion before focusing on his individual goals.

The victory over Bodrum provided an ideal beginning to that mission. Bursaspor controlled the result away from home and showed early signs of their promotion credentials.

Iheanacho's arrival has generated significant attention in Turkey because of his experience in the Premier League, Scottish Premiership and European competitions. Bursaspor president Enes Çelik previously revealed that the club had made a major financial commitment to secure the Nigerian, with the player's annual salary reported at €1.4 million.

The forward will now look to build on his opening performance when Bursaspor return to action against Iğdır FK on August 16. The club's early position near the top of the table has already increased expectations around their promotion campaign.

For Iheanacho, the perfect debut has provided an early indication of what he can offer. His goal, assist and Man of the Match award have given Bursaspor supporters plenty of encouragement as the club begins its push for a return to the Turkish top flight.
