Katsina State is set to become the centre of Nigerian club football as the 2026 NFF President Pre-Season Tournament gets underway on Saturday, with 16 teams from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) and Nigeria National League (NNL) expected to battle for honours.
The competition, popularly known as the Gusau/Ahlan Cup, will officially kick off at the Muhammadu Dikko Stadium, where hosts Katsina United will take on Wikki Tourists of Bauchi in the opening match at 4:00 p.m.
Tournament Coordinator, Alhaji Abahuraira Dahiru, said all participating clubs are expected to arrive in Katsina on Thursday and Friday, while the complete fixtures for the competition will be released on Friday night after the arrival of all teams.
He noted that the impressive response from participating clubs underscores the growing status of the annual tournament as an important platform for teams to fine-tune preparations ahead of the new football season.
Dahiru also praised the football community in Katsina for its continued support and commended the Executive Governor of Katsina State, Dr. Dikko Umar Radda, for providing the resources and support needed to host the competition.
He added that the Local Organising Committee, led by the Chairman of the Jigawa State Football Association, Alhaji Sabo Abdullahi, is working with relevant stakeholders to ensure a successful and hitch-free tournament.
The pre-season competition will run from Aug. 8 to Aug. 20, providing clubs with valuable match experience while giving fans an early glimpse of some of the country's top football talents ahead of the 2026/2027 season.
The tournament is expected to offer participating clubs a valuable opportunity to assess their squads, test new signings, and sharpen tactics before the new campaign begins. Fans can also look forward to a competitive showcase as teams intensify preparations for the forthcoming season.
