The second edition of the Nwankwo Kanu U-19 Football Tournament kicked off on Friday, June 14, at the Enyimba International Stadium, Aba, with three exciting matches marking the opening day.
The tournament, initiated by Enyimba FC Chairman Nwankwo Kanu and organised by Enyimba Sporting Director Ifeanyi Ekwueme, aims to discover and nurture young football talents. It debuted in 2024 and has now expanded to include two host centres—Aba and Owerri—with six teams competing in Aba.
Teams participating at the Aba centre include:
In the opening match, Apex Crane FC edged Enyimba U-17 with a 1-0 win. The second match saw Aba Madrid FC play a 1-1 draw against Okwu United, while the third fixture ended in a goalless draw between Ngwa United and Petson Academy.
According to Coach Isaac Loute of Apex Crane FC, a former player of Enugu Rangers, the tournament is already fulfilling its goal:
“I loved what I saw from the first match. Our opponents, Enyimba U-17, showed promise. This competition is a great platform for youth development, and we expect to see more improvement as it progresses.”
Winners from both Aba and Owerri centres will meet in the grand finale, scheduled to hold at the Enyimba International Stadium.
Matches continue on Sunday, June 16, from 9:00 a.m. at the same venue.
