Kano Set for Renewed Hope Football Cup as Organisers Unveil ₦17m Prize Purse

Kano is set to become the centre of grassroots football in Northern Nigeria as the 2026 President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Renewed Hope Football Cup gets underway in September, with organisers putting up a total prize purse of ₦17 million.

The two-week tournament, tagged “The Game Changer,” will bring together young footballers from the 19 Northern states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), with the organisers positioning the competition as a vehicle for youth empowerment, peace-building and social cohesion.

The Special Adviser on Sports and Youth Development to the Kano State Governor, Alhaji Sani Musa Danja, said the tournament would provide a constructive avenue for young people to develop their talents while discouraging involvement in social vices.

According to him, the competition will also strengthen relationships among youths from different communities and states through sporting activities.

Technical Director of the tournament, Dr Abdulgafar Oladimeji, said the initiative would go beyond competition by contributing to the growth of grassroots football in the region.

He said the tournament would provide opportunities for talent discovery, improve the capacity of coaches and support personnel, encourage social interaction and contribute to economic activities in Kano.

The competition will commence with a group-stage format before moving into the knockout rounds, culminating in the grand finale at the Sani Abacha Indoor Stadium, Kano.

The champions will receive ₦10 million, while the runners-up will pocket ₦5 million and the third-placed team will take home ₦2 million.

The organisers said the ₦17 million prize package was designed to reward sporting excellence, motivate youths to pursue productive careers through football and promote stronger community ties across Northern Nigeria.

With participation expected from across the region, the Renewed Hope Football Cup is set to combine football with a broader message of peace, unity, youth development and community integration.
