Kano Pillars will put their unbeaten start to the 2026/2027 Euromatch Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season on the line when they welcome Enyimba International FC to the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano on Sunday.

The encounter presents a sharp contrast in fortunes, with Pillars riding a wave of confidence while the nine-time champions are searching for a way out of a difficult start to the campaign.

Under coach Daniel Ogunmodede, the Sai Masu Gida have combined the experience of established campaigners with the energy of emerging talents to remain among the unbeaten teams in the division.

Pillars opened their campaign with a 2-2 draw away to Kwara United after surrendering a two-goal lead before securing their first victory by edging Niger Tornadoes 3-2 in Kano.

They then produced one of their most impressive performances of the campaign, defeating previously unbeaten Doma United 4-1 at the Sani Abacha Stadium, with veteran captain Rabiu Ali and Ahmed Musa among the scorers.

The four-time champions followed that result by travelling to Lagos, where they held Inter Lagos to a 1-1 draw in midweek to preserve their unbeaten record.

With 10 goals scored and four conceded from four matches, Pillars have established themselves as one of the more productive attacking sides in the early stages of the campaign. They currently occupy sixth position with eight points.

Much of the attention will again be on Ahmed Musa, whose influential performances have added another dimension to Pillars' attack, while the experienced Rabiu Ali continues to provide leadership in midfield.

For Enyimba, however, the trip to Kano comes at a particularly difficult moment.

The People's Elephant have lost all five of their matches so far, leaving them without a single point and at the bottom of the standings. The NPFL has described Enyimba's opening as the club's worst start in the history of the top division.

Their difficult run began with a 2-1 defeat away to Niger Tornadoes on the opening day, followed by a 2-0 loss at Doma United. They then suffered consecutive home defeats to Lagos-based sides, losing 1-0 to Inter Lagos before falling 3-2 to Sporting Lagos in midweek.

Against Sporting Lagos, Enyimba twice took the lead through Stanley Dimgba and Tobi Ige Iyanda, but conceded twice in the second half before Haruna Hadi completed Sporting's comeback with a late winner.

The result extended Enyimba's losing streak to five matches, a difficult sequence for a club with nine Nigerian league titles and a distinguished place in the country's football history.

The People's Elephant now face another demanding assignment against a Kano Pillars side that has yet to taste defeat this season.

Beyond the points at stake, the fixture carries the weight of one of Nigerian football's established rivalries. Pillars will be looking to maintain their strong momentum, while Enyimba need a response to prevent their difficult start from becoming even more damaging.

With contrasting fortunes, experienced players on both sides and a passionate Kano crowd expected at the Sani Abacha Stadium, Sunday's encounter promises to be one of the most closely watched fixtures of Matchday 6.
