Posted : 30 June 2025

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State has renamed two major sports institutions in the state to honour 22 athletes who tragically died in a road accident in May while returning from the 2024 National Sports Festival in Ogun State.

The announcement was made on Sunday through a statement issued by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Mustapha Muhammed.

According to the statement, the accident occurred just five kilometres from Kano as the state’s contingent returned from the national event. Governor Yusuf described the incident as a devastating loss for the state and praised the athletes for their dedication and achievements.

“The athletes made Kano proud and will be remembered for their sacrifices towards sports development in the state,” the governor said.

He disclosed that the Kano State Sports Institute has been renamed the Kano State 22 Athletes Sports Institute, while the Kano State Sports Commission is now known as the Kano State 22 Athletes Sports Commission.

“These young athletes are heroes of Kano who fought for the successes we recorded at the National Sports Festival,” the governor said.

Governor Yusuf also announced a series of support initiatives for the families left behind. He pledged that the state government would fund the education of the deceased athletes’ children and include their widows in economic empowerment programmes. Parents of the unmarried athletes will also benefit from similar support.

The governor expressed appreciation to Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for donating N110 million to the affected families as part of efforts to cushion the impact of their loss.

The tragedy, which drew national attention, sparked calls for improved safety measures for sports contingents traveling across the country. The Kano government’s gesture is widely seen as a lasting tribute to the lives and contributions of the young sportsmen and women,
