Bayern Munich secured their place in the knockout stages of the FIFA Club World Cup with a determined 2-1 victory over Boca Juniors at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium on Friday. Goals from Harry Kane and Michael Olise proved enough to see off the Argentine giants in a match that marked the first loss for a South American team at this year’s tournament. With the win, Bayern now top Group C with six points from two games, having previously overwhelmed Auckland City 10-0.
The match began with Bayern on the front foot, their midfield pairing of Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka dictating the tempo. Although Michael Olise's early corner appeared to sneak in for an opener, VAR overturned the decision due to interference by Serge Gnabry.
The German side didn’t have to wait long, however, as Kane capitalized on a defensive lapse in the 18th minute to slot home the game’s first goal with a clinical finish. Bayern continued to push forward, but Boca’s goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin kept them in the match with several key stops.
Boca came alive in the second half, fueled by the relentless energy of their supporters and an attacking surge led by Kevin Zenon and Alan Velasco. Their persistence paid off in the 66th minute when Miguel Merentiel netted a superb equalizer, briefly reviving hopes of maintaining the continent’s unbeaten run.
But Bayern responded decisively in the 84th minute as Kane’s clever assist set up Olise, who calmly stroked the ball into the corner to restore the lead and seal the result.
The win not only secured Bayern’s passage to the last 16 but also dealt a serious blow to Boca’s hopes of advancing, leaving them with just a point ahead of their final group game. The match was a statement from Bayern, especially after fellow European sides Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea suffered defeats to South American opposition. With their knockout spot secured, the German giants now prepare for tougher challenges ahead as they seek to claim the Club World Cup title.
