Julian Nagelsmann Vows to Stay as Germany Exit World Cup After Paraguay Shootout Defeat

Posted : 30 June 2026

Germany head coach Julian Nagelsmann has expressed his desire to remain in charge of the national team despite their disappointing World Cup exit following a penalty shootout defeat to Paraguay in the Round of 32.

The four-time world champions were eliminated after losing 4-3 on penalties, marking the first time Germany have ever been beaten in a World Cup shootout. Defender Jonathan Tah's missed spot-kick proved decisive as Paraguay secured a famous victory and advanced to the next round.

Speaking after the match, Nagelsmann made it clear that he has no intention of stepping away from the role. The 38-year-old said he is committed to continuing as head coach, although he acknowledged that the final decision rests with the German Football Association (DFB).

Nagelsmann, whose current contract runs until the 2028 European Championship, said he is prepared to lead Germany into both the upcoming UEFA Nations League campaign and the next European Championship if the federation continues to support him.

Germany's early elimination is expected to increase pressure on the young coach, with questions already emerging about the team's direction after another disappointing major tournament performance.

Former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, who attended the match in Foxborough, Massachusetts, as part of his television duties for German broadcaster MagentaTV, was once again linked with the national team job. However, Klopp declined to comment on speculation about a possible future appointment, saying it was not the appropriate time to discuss the subject.

Despite the painful defeat, midfielder Nadiem Amiri believes Germany has the foundations to recover and build a stronger team for future tournaments. He pointed to the squad's wealth of young talent but admitted the disappointment of the loss made it difficult to think beyond the present moment.

Several experienced players may not feature when the next World Cup arrives in 2030, but Germany can still rely on an emerging generation led by Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz, who are expected to be entering their peak years. Highly regarded teenager Lennart Karl is also expected to strengthen the squad after missing this tournament through injury.

Amiri, who came off the bench late in extra time and successfully converted his penalty in the shootout, described the defeat as deeply painful. He said the squad possesses significant quality and potential, but acknowledged that the emotions following such a dramatic exit made it difficult to find the right words or focus on what lies ahead.
