Julián Álvarez Credits Lionel Messi Inspiration After Stunning Free Kick vs Barcelona

Julián Álvarez has revealed that his spectacular free kick against FC Barcelona was inspired by Argentina teammate Lionel Messi, as Atlético Madrid claimed a commanding 2-0 victory in their Champions League quarter-final first leg.

The forward curled a sensational strike into the top corner at Camp Nou just before half-time, giving Atlético Madrid a crucial advantage in the tie. His goal proved decisive in a match where Diego Simeone’s side capitalised on key moments to secure control of the contest.

Álvarez admitted he had studied Messi’s famous free-kick goal against Liverpool in 2019 and tried to replicate a similar technique on the big stage. He also revealed that despite struggling in training the day before, he felt confident once he struck the ball during the match.

The Argentine forward’s goal contributed to a strong overall performance from Atlético, who also added a second strike through Alexander Sørloth to seal the win. Álvarez, who now has 18 goals this season, said he remains focused on maintaining his form as the team prepares for the return leg.
