Joy Omewa Hits Structural Brace As Super Falcons Thrash Senegal In Ikenne

Posted : 09 June 2026

The Nigerian senior women's national football team delivered an exceptional offensive performance to down Senegal 3-0 on Monday afternoon. The international friendly match took place at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State. The clear victory completed a successful double-header sweep against the visiting Teranga Lionesses, following a narrow 2-2 aggregate indicator from the previous week's hard-fought 2-1 opening victory.

Interim head coach Justin Madugu made five tactical changes to his initial matchday lineup. Star goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie returned to anchor the defense, while young forward Joy Omewa received a starting role to lead the frontline alongside Gift Monday. The tactical adjustment yielded heavy offensive pressure from the opening whistle; captain Rasheedat Ajibade created an immediate set-piece opportunity within the opening sixty seconds.

Despite holding massive portions of possession, the hosts struggled initially to break down Senegal's deep defensive structure. Gift Monday remained a constant physical threat on the right wing, unlocking space for her fellow attackers. Omewa came agonisingly close to breaking the deadlock in the 15th minute, but her effort struck the woodwork after she successfully dribbled around the Senegalese goalkeeper.

The technical breakthrough arrived shortly after the halftime interval. In the 49th minute, defender Shukurat Oladipo delivered a perfectly weighted cross from the flank. Omewa timed her run brilliantly to power a decisive near-post header into the net. The young forward doubled the advantage just seven minutes later, muscling her way through the opposition backline before finishing with immense composure.

The Super Falcons sealed the dominant performance in the 66th minute. Captain Ajibade embarked on a brilliant vertical run through the middle before providing a precise assist to substitute forward Asisat Oshoala. The veteran striker, who replaced Omewa moments earlier, calmly slotted the ball home to cap a 5-1 aggregate series triumph.

The international double-header serves as vital structural preparation for the upcoming 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations scheduled for Morocco. The continental tournament will commence on July 25 and run through August 16. The record-holding Super Falcons have been placed into a competitive Group C alongside Egypt, Zambia, and tournament debutants Malawi.
