Josiah Uwakhonye Expresses Pride After Signing First Professional Contract With Gladbach

Posted : 15 June 2026

Highly-rated Nigerian forward Josiah Uwakhonye has expressed massive delight after committing his long-term future to Borussia Monchengladbach. The versatile 18-year-old attacker has officially put pen to paper on his first professional contract with the German Bundesliga outfit. The fresh agreement keeps him tied to the club until June 30, 2029.

The ambidextrous forward possesses the tactical flexibility to operate comfortably across the entire frontline. He originally moved to Monchengladbach's academy back in 2015 from local youth club SC Union Nettetal. The young prodigy was only seven years old when he joined the prestigious Bundesliga youth ranks.

Uwakhonye has shown phenomenal goalscoring instincts while rising through the various youth structures. He registered 13 goals in 31 competitive appearances for the U17 squad; he followed that up by racking up an incredible 25 goals across 49 fixtures for the U19 team. His continuous scoring form quickly caught the eye of senior team scouts.

The versatile attacker made 16 appearances for the reserve team, Borussia Monchengladbach II, in the Regionalliga West last season. He managed to score four goals during those competitive fixtures before tragedy struck. His rapid progress was severely halted in March due to a serious ankle ligament tear.

The unfortunate injury forced the teenager to miss roughly the final third of the football campaign. However, Monchengladbach's hierarchy demonstrated immense trust in his high potential by offering him senior terms. Academy director Mirko Sandmoeller noted that the club wants to prepare him specifically for first-team action.

Taking to social media, the young forward expressed profound gratitude to his family and academy trainers. He noted that signing professional terms with his childhood club feels completely dreamlike. He remains highly optimistic about making his official Bundesliga debut once he completes his rehabilitation process.
