José Mourinho has confirmed his intention to continue managing Benfica next season, despite admitting that his team’s chances of winning the Primeira Liga have faded. The Portuguese coach, whose contract runs until June 2027, has a clause allowing him to leave this summer, but he emphasized that he wants to remain with the club.
Following Benfica’s 1-1 draw with Casa Pia on Monday, Mourinho acknowledged that FC Porto has effectively secured a lead in the title race. Although Benfica remain unbeaten in the league, they are seven points behind Porto with six matches left, while Sporting CP sit two points ahead of Benfica with a game in hand. Mourinho stated, "You say we've dropped two points; I'd say we've lost our last chance to fight for the title."
Mourinho also reflected on his team’s performance against Casa Pia, noting that some players did not meet the expected level. Despite his frustrations, Mourinho acknowledged that player management must consider the club’s broader objectives and player value.
Looking ahead, Mourinho sees Benfica’s realistic goal as finishing second in the league, contingent on other teams’ results. He reaffirmed his commitment to the club, stating, "Jorge Mendes is my agent, but I am in charge of my own decision. My decision is that I would like to continue at Benfica."
The 61-year-old coach returned to Portuguese football in September after 21 years abroad and has been guiding Benfica through a season that, while unbeaten, now appears to fall short of its title ambitions. Mourinho’s focus remains on maximizing team performance while navigating the final stretch of the Primeira Liga.
