Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has offered a positive update on Jorginho, revealing that the midfielder is making steady progress in his recovery from a lung injury and could return before the season ends. The 33-year-old last featured in Arsenal’s 1-1 draw with Brentford on 12 April, exiting the match late with what was initially believed to be a chest issue.
Arteta noted that the injury turned out to be more complex than first thought, though he confirmed Jorginho is now recovering well and may be available in the coming weeks if all goes according to plan.
Although Arsenal have not disclosed the full extent of Jorginho’s injury, reports suggest he suffered a punctured lung. As the Italian nears the end of his contract, his time at the Emirates appears limited, with a summer departure expected.
Since joining from Chelsea for £12 million in January 2023, Jorginho has made 78 appearances for the club and currently serves as Arteta’s vice-captain, making his possible return an important factor in Arsenal’s final stretch of the campaign.
Arteta also provided encouraging news about Kai Havertz, who is recovering from hamstring surgery following a serious injury suffered during a training camp in Dubai in February. Initially expected to miss the rest of the season, the German forward is now on track to make a surprise return.
With Arsenal preparing for the Champions League semi-final second leg against Paris Saint-Germain on Wednesday, the possibility of Havertz featuring later in the competition could provide a vital boost to their attacking options.
