Joao Pedro Poised for Chelsea Debut in Club World Cup

Posted : 03 July 2025

New Chelsea signing Joao Pedro could make his first appearance for the club when they take on Brazilian side Palmeiras in the quarterfinals of the FIFA Club World Cup on Friday. The 23-year-old forward, who joined from Brighton in a £60 million ($79 million) move, began training with Enzo Maresca's squad in Miami shortly after signing an eight-year contract. His debut could come just days after his arrival, as Chelsea seek to advance in the tournament hosted in the United States.

Pedro, who hails from the state of São Paulo and began his career at Fluminense, is no stranger to Palmeiras, the Copa Libertadores champions of 2020 and 2021. The match will mark a reunion of sorts, as the two clubs previously met in the 2022 Club World Cup final, which Chelsea won.

This time, the setting is Philadelphia, where Chelsea returned on Thursday after their preparations in Miami. If Chelsea progress, they could face Fluminense in the semifinals—another team close to Pedro's heart.

Chelsea enter the match after a 4-1 extra-time victory over Benfica in the last 16, having earlier lost 3-1 to Flamengo in the group stage. Liam Delap, another recent addition, opened his Chelsea account in a 3-0 win over Esperance.

Palmeiras, meanwhile, trained locally in Philadelphia and are expected to start teenage sensation Estevao Willian, who has already agreed to join Chelsea in the future. With key defenders Gustavo Gomez and Joaquin Piquerez suspended, the Brazilian side will hope their attacking talent, combined with preparation at the Philadelphia Eagles’ NFL facility, can help them pull off an upset.
