Xabi Alonso enjoyed a winning start to his Chelsea reign as the Blues fought back to defeat Western Sydney Wanderers 6-4 in a remarkable 10-goal pre-season friendly at Stadium Australia. Brazilian forward Joao Pedro stole the show by coming off the bench to score a hat-trick in just nine minutes, rescuing Chelsea after they had fallen behind three separate times.

Alonso, who officially took charge on 1 July, fielded a youthful starting lineup with many of Chelsea's established stars unavailable following their World Cup commitments. The Spanish coach opted for a 4-2-3-1 formation, relying on experienced figures such as Tosin Adarabioyo, Josh Acheampong and Liam Delap to guide several academy graduates.

Chelsea made the perfect start when 17-year-old Kazakh prospect Dastan Satpaev marked his debut with a well-taken goal after racing onto a precise through ball. However, defensive lapses allowed the Wanderers to respond through Anthony Pantazopoulos and Aydan Hammond, putting the Australian side 2-1 ahead before Portugal youth international Dario Essugo restored parity with an excellent finish following a slick passing move.

The hosts regained the lead twice after the interval, with Dylan Scicluna making it 3-2 before another goal pushed Western Sydney 4-3 ahead. Alonso reacted by introducing nine substitutions, including Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro, and Chelsea's intensity immediately improved as the visitors launched a dramatic late comeback.

Pedro proved to be the match-winner, scoring three times in a nine-minute spell to complete a sensational turnaround and hand Alonso a confidence-boosting victory in his first game as Chelsea manager. The entertaining contest highlighted both Chelsea's attacking quality and the defensive improvements still required ahead of the new campaign.

Chelsea have already strengthened their squad this summer with the arrivals of Morgan Rogers, Geovany Quenda, Marco Palestra and Emmanuel Emegha. Of those signings, only Palestra featured on the pre-season tour, while several senior internationals, including Reece James and Enzo Fernandez, remain absent after international duty.

Alonso's side now face a tougher examination when they meet London rivals Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday before continuing their pre-season tour with fixtures in Hong Kong, Indonesia and Malaysia.
