Chelsea forward João Pedro has revealed that his friendship with Cole Palmer began with a reassuring conversation when he joined the club from Brighton in 2025. The Brazilian striker explained that he wanted Palmer to understand that his arrival was intended to strengthen the team rather than threaten the England international’s position.
Pedro quickly established himself at Stamford Bridge, earning Chelsea’s Player of the Season award for 2025-26 after scoring 20 goals and providing nine assists in 50 appearances. He believes the welcoming atmosphere within the squad and his close relationship with his teammates have played an important role in his development.
Speaking to ESPN, the 25-year-old explained that Palmer reached out to him when he arrived and helped him settle into his new surroundings. Pedro said he made it clear that he had come to contribute to the team rather than compete with Palmer for his place.
According to the Brazilian, that initial exchange laid the foundation for a friendship that extends beyond the pitch. He added that the positive relationships among Chelsea’s players have made it easier for newcomers to adapt, with the squad offering support and encouragement from the beginning.
Pedro also highlighted the importance of playing alongside talented teammates, including Palmer, Reece James and Moisés Caicedo. He believes their quality and willingness to work together have helped him become more effective in the centre-forward role.
Under manager Xabi Alonso, Pedro has formed an attacking partnership with Palmer and Morgan Rogers. The trio have benefited from Chelsea’s preferred 3-4-2-1 formation, which allows them to combine in advanced positions and create opportunities through movement, passing and individual skill.
Pedro credited Alonso’s confidence in him as another key factor behind his strong performances this season. He explained that having Palmer and Rogers supplying passes and creating chances has made his job easier, adding that their promising start has left him optimistic about what Chelsea can achieve.
After six Premier League appearances in the current campaign, Pedro has recorded five goals and three assists. Despite being left out of Brazil’s squad for the 2026 World Cup by Carlo Ancelotti, the forward has continued to focus on his club performances.
Pedro’s journey to becoming an important figure at Chelsea has not been without challenges. Before joining Brighton and subsequently moving to Stamford Bridge, he spent several seasons at Watford, where he experienced the disappointment of relegation to the Championship in 2022.
Rather than leave the club immediately, Pedro decided to stay and continue working towards his ambitions. He considers that decision a turning point in his career, explaining that it taught him the importance of perseverance and overcoming difficult circumstances.
The Brazilian acknowledged that moving to Europe does not guarantee immediate success and that young players must be prepared to face setbacks along the way. He said his experience at Watford strengthened his determination to establish himself at the highest level of English football.
Pedro remains focused on the present rather than dwelling on past disappointments. With his confidence growing, a strong relationship with Palmer and the support of Alonso, he hopes to maintain his impressive form and help Chelsea enjoy a successful campaign.
