JJ Gabriel Asks to Leave Manchester United

Posted : 15 September 2026

Manchester United’s highly rated 15-year-old forward JJ Gabriel has asked to leave the club, with British media reporting that he has formally requested the cancellation of his registration.

Gabriel is regarded as one of the most promising young players in Manchester United’s academy and has trained with Michael Carrick’s first team. He made his senior debut as a substitute in a pre-season friendly against Atlético Madrid and had been expected to be involved in Wednesday’s Carabao Cup third-round tie against Brighton at Old Trafford.

The teenager’s request comes only days after he scored a hat-trick on his UEFA Youth League debut against Sabah, further highlighting his rapid development.

After United’s 5-0 victory, youth coach Adam Lawrence praised the support surrounding Gabriel and stressed the importance of giving him the right level of exposure as he develops.

“JJ is surrounded by people that really, really believe in him from the top of the club right the way through,” Lawrence said.

“He's been at the club for so long. He's got real good relationships with the players, with the staff, so I think over the course of time obviously that helps as well.

“At the moment, just in terms of his game, his games programme, his training programme, it's about making sure that he's getting the right exposure across different levels.”

Gabriel, who turns 16 on Oct. 6, has attracted significant attention for his performances at youth level. Manchester United are understood to remain hopeful of resolving the situation and convincing him to stay at Old Trafford.

The latest development also means Gabriel is no longer expected to feature in the squad for the Brighton match, despite previously being in contention to become Manchester United’s youngest-ever first-team player.

The club is reportedly unclear about what prompted the request, while British reports indicate that United still believe the situation can be resolved.
