Jim Ratcliffe completes £1.25 billion purchase of 25% stake in Manchester United

Posted : 21 February 2024

Jim Ratcliffe has successfully concluded his acquisition of a 25% stake in Premier League club Manchester United, along with a $300 million investment in the club's infrastructure and control over soccer operations.

The $1.25 billion deal, finalized in December, received Premier League approval last week, clearing the path for Ratcliffe's INEOS Group to take charge of football operations while the Glazer family retains a majority stake. Ratcliffe, an avid United fan, expressed his commitment to propelling the club to the pinnacle of English, European, and world football.

Ratcliffe emphasized the honor and responsibility of becoming co-owner of Manchester United, marking not only the completion of the transaction but the commencement of a journey to elevate the club's status.

The deal includes acquiring 25% of the team's class B shares, predominantly held by the Glazer family, and up to 25% of its class A shares listed on the New York Stock Exchange. With Premier League approval secured, Ratcliffe, the INEOS chairman, is poised to accelerate efforts in realizing world-class facilities and restoring the club's prominence on the global football stage.

Executive co-chairman Joel Glazer extended a welcome to Sir Jim Ratcliffe as co-owner, expressing anticipation for a collaborative effort with INEOS Sport to usher in a bright future for Manchester United. Ratcliffe, at 71 years old, views his ownership in the club as the most exciting endeavor of his life.

As the new co-owner, Ratcliffe aims to work closely with the existing ownership structure, setting sights on rejuvenating Manchester United's competitive standing as they currently hold the sixth position in the Premier League.
