Jay 1 FC, Bwari emerge FCT League champions

Jay 1 FC of Kubwa and Bwari Area Council have emerged champions of the 2026 FCT Football Association League, winning the men’s and women’s titles respectively after keenly contested finals in Abuja.

Jay 1 FC secured the men’s championship with a narrow 1-0 victory over Basic FC Jabi, with Miracle converting from the penalty spot to hand the Kubwa-based side the coveted title.

The triumph earned Jay 1 FC the right to represent the Federal Capital Territory at the playoffs, with coach Ezeudo Justin expressing confidence that his players can make a strong impression at the next stage.

Justin said the victory was a reward for the team’s hard work and determination, adding that the players would remain focused as they prepare for the playoffs.

In the women’s category, Bwari Area Council defeated Kuje 1-0, courtesy of Patricia Habila’s decisive goal to claim the championship.

AMAC finished third after overcoming Kwali 3-1 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time.

Beyond the results, the competition provided another platform for Area Councils across the FCT to showcase emerging football talents, with stakeholders stressing the need to sustain investment in grassroots sports.

Acting Director of Sports, FCT, Iyinola Ogundele, described the increasing participation of the Area Councils as an encouraging development, saying the territory has the capacity to regain its status as one of Nigeria’s leading sporting centres.

Ogundele emphasised the importance of grassroots competitions in identifying and nurturing young talents, noting that sports offer young people opportunities that extend beyond medals and competition.

He also appealed for increased media coverage of sports in the FCT, saying improved visibility would help attract investment and create more opportunities for athletes.

Chairperson of the FCT Football Association Women’s Football Committee, Dr Pat Ajuma Ayegba, commended the participating teams, particularly for providing young female footballers with an avenue to develop their skills and gain competitive experience.

Ayegba announced that the third edition of the FCT FA Women’s Inter-Area Council Tournament is scheduled for April 2027 and is expected to be bigger and better.

She explained that the tournament would also contribute to efforts to revive the FCT Queens, creating a pathway for talented female players to progress into elite football.

Representing FCT FA Chairman Adam Mouktar Mohammed, First Vice Chairman Alhaji Salihu Kolo said the league was designed to identify players with the quality and potential to represent the territory at higher levels.

Kolo assured that the association would continue collaborating with the Area Councils to strengthen grassroots football and create more opportunities for young players.

For Bwari Area Council, the women’s triumph was the product of months of preparation and sustained commitment to sports development.

Bwari Chief of Staff, Tukura John Daniel, said the championship was only the beginning, expressing confidence that the council would continue to compete strongly and defend its title in subsequent editions.

The successful conclusion of the 2026 FCT League has further highlighted the importance of grassroots football as a talent pipeline, with stakeholders urging sustained investment, wider publicity and stronger institutional support to ensure young players in the territory have a clear pathway to the elite level.
