Japan, South Korea End World Cup Qualifying in Style with Convincing Wins

Posted : 10 June 2025

Japan and South Korea finished their World Cup qualifying campaigns in commanding fashion on Tuesday, each posting emphatic home wins. In Osaka, Crystal Palace's Daichi Kamada netted twice in the first half to lead Japan to a 6-0 demolition of Indonesia, sealing their status as Group C winners.

Additional goals from Takefusa Kubo, Ryoya Morishita, Shuto Machino, and Mao Hosoya highlighted Japan’s attacking depth. Meanwhile, in Seoul, Paris Saint Germain's Lee Kang-in was among the scorers in South Korea's 4-0 rout of Kuwait, with Jeon Jin-woo opening the scoring and further goals coming from Oh Hyeon-gyu and Lee Jae-sung.

With qualification already secured, both Asian powerhouses used the final round to fine-tune their squads. Japan head coach Hajime Moriyasu expressed satisfaction with his team’s attitude and called on his players to keep evolving, aiming for nothing less than World Cup victory next year in North America.

Kamada, reflecting on the need to adapt against higher-level opposition, stressed the importance of continued growth as the squad prepares for friendlies outside Asia. Moriyasu echoed that sentiment, urging his players to push beyond their limits in every aspect of the game.

Elsewhere in Asia, Wang Yudong’s stoppage-time penalty gave China a 1-0 win over Bahrain, sparing them a last-place finish in Group C. With Australia and Saudi Arabia set to clash later in the day for the final qualifying spot, other teams like Iran, Uzbekistan, and Jordan have already punched their tickets to next year’s tournament.

Son Heung-min, recovering from injury, made a brief appearance for South Korea to the delight of home fans, though he didn’t add to the final scoreline. Third- and fourth-place teams from each group will now enter another round of qualifiers with two more spots still up for grabs.
