James Maddison Shines on Tottenham Return as Spurs End Premier League Winless Run

Posted : 20 October 2026

James Maddison made an impressive return to Tottenham Hotspur’s starting lineup after 17 months away as Spurs defeated Coventry City 3-1, finally securing their first Premier League victory of the campaign. The England international celebrated his comeback with a spectacular opening goal, helping lift the pressure on manager Roberto De Zerbi.

Maddison had endured a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering two serious knee injuries, including a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in August 2025. His limited appearances since May 2025 had kept him away from regular first-team football, making his return to the starting eleven a significant moment for both the player and the club.

The midfielder wasted little time making an impact at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. In the 14th minute, he collected a pass from Mohammed Kudus on the edge of the penalty area and unleashed a superb first-time shot that curled beyond Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth and into the top corner.

The goal sparked celebrations among the home supporters and gave Tottenham an early advantage. Maddison nearly doubled the lead before the break, but his effort drifted narrowly wide as Spurs looked to build on their promising start.

Speaking after the match, Maddison said he was eager to demonstrate his abilities and remind supporters of what he could contribute following his lengthy absence. He also expressed confidence that, at 29, he still had plenty of football ahead of him and could help Tottenham improve their position in the league.Tottenham appeared poised to take control after Maddison’s opener, but Coventry gradually found their rhythm under Frank Lampard. The visitors had won their previous two matches and showed resilience against a Spurs side desperate to end its poor run.

Coventry drew level four minutes into the second half when Jack Rudoni finished from close range in the 49th minute. Tottenham had lost possession in the attacking half, allowing the visitors to launch a quick counterattack that ended with Rudoni finding the net.

The hosts restored their advantage nine minutes later through Omar Marmoush. The former Manchester City forward held off Milan van Ewijk before unleashing a powerful shot into the net for his first goal since joining Tottenham.

Ben Davies then secured the victory deep into stoppage time, finishing in the 90th minute plus six to make it 3-1 and ease the tension inside the stadium.

The night brought further encouragement for Tottenham fans as Dejan Kulusevski returned to competitive action after 526 days out with a knee injury. The Swedish international came off the bench late in the match and received a warm reception from the home crowd.

The result lifted Tottenham to 16th place in the Premier League standings, providing manager De Zerbi with some much-needed relief after a difficult start to the season. Spurs had entered the fixture at the bottom of the table despite significant investment in new players during the summer.

The club will now hope that Maddison’s return and the improved team performance can provide the foundation for a sustained recovery. With key players returning from injury and confidence boosted by their first league victory, Tottenham will look to build momentum in the matches ahead.
