Maddison Calls Tottenham’s Relegation Fight ‘Embarrassing’ Ahead of Crucial Final Day

Posted : 20 May 2026

James Maddison has admitted that Tottenham Hotspur’s struggle to avoid Premier League relegation is difficult to accept, describing the situation as “embarrassing” for a club of Spurs’ stature.

Tottenham failed to secure their safety after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Chelsea on Tuesday night at Stamford Bridge. A positive result would have almost guaranteed survival due to Spurs’ superior goal difference, but the loss means the battle to stay in the top flight will go down to the final day of the season.

Spurs now face a crucial home fixture against Everton on Sunday, knowing that a victory — and likely even a draw — should be enough to preserve their Premier League status.

Maddison, who recently returned from a long-term knee injury, stressed the importance of the occasion and insisted the players must rise to the challenge for the supporters and the club’s reputation.

The England international acknowledged that Tottenham should never have found themselves in such a dangerous position, but said the squad must now focus fully on delivering in the decisive final match of the campaign.

He also praised the travelling supporters at Chelsea, calling their backing “unbelievable,” and urged the team to repay the fans with a strong performance against Everton.

Chelsea took control of Tuesday’s match through goals from Enzo Fernandez and Andrey Santos before Richarlison reduced the deficit late on. Maddison came close to equalising after his introduction from the bench, but his effort was brilliantly blocked by Jorrel Hato.

Tottenham were also frustrated by a controversial moment involving captain Micky van de Ven, who was brought down in the penalty area by Marc Cucurella. However, referee Stuart Attwell ruled the incident occurred before the corner kick had officially come into play.

Maddison admitted he is still carefully managing his recovery after suffering a serious anterior cruciate ligament injury earlier in the season. He explained that returning too quickly could risk further damage and harm his long-term career.

Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi also confirmed that Maddison’s minutes remain restricted on medical advice, indicating the midfielder is unlikely to play more than a short period against Everton as Spurs attempt to avoid a disastrous relegation.
