James Maddison Excited by Roberto De Zerbi's Vision as Tottenham Prepare for New Season

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder James Maddison has expressed his enthusiasm for working under new head coach Roberto De Zerbi, describing the Italian's attack-minded philosophy as the ideal style for his game. Speaking during Spurs' pre-season tour in Australia, the England international said he is eager to embrace the club's new direction ahead of the 2026-27 campaign.

De Zerbi was appointed in March following the departure of interim manager Igor Tudor, taking charge during a difficult period in which Tottenham were struggling in the Premier League. He guided the club to safety with a dramatic final-day victory over Everton, securing a 17th-place finish before beginning an extensive rebuild during the summer transfer window.

Maddison, who missed much of last season after suffering a serious knee injury, said the new manager has already made his intentions clear. According to the playmaker, De Zerbi wants Tottenham to play attractive football, compete with greater intensity and restore pride to the club's performances.

The midfielder admitted he is still adapting to De Zerbi's tactical approach but believes the coach's emphasis on possession and attacking football suits creative players. Maddison added that he enjoys working with a manager who encourages his team to dominate the ball and create chances, saying he is excited about what lies ahead.

Tottenham have already made an encouraging start to pre-season, opening their tour with a 2-0 victory over A-League champions Auckland FC thanks to goals from Dane Scarlett and Richarlison. Spurs will continue their preparations with matches against Sydney FC and Premier League rivals Chelsea before returning to England for the start of the new campaign.

Looking ahead to Tottenham's opening Premier League fixture against Brentford on 22 August, Maddison stressed the importance of building momentum during pre-season. He said the squad is focused on improving after disappointing performances over the past two seasons and is working hard to develop the playing style De Zerbi wants to implement.

The Italian coach has also reshaped his squad with several high-profile arrivals. Midfielders Mateus Fernandes and Sandro Tonali headline Tottenham's summer signings, while defender Jan Paul van Hecke has joined from Brighton. Experienced trio Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and goalkeeper Martin Dubravka have also strengthened the squad on free transfers as Spurs prepare for a fresh era under De Zerbi.
