James Johnson Resigns as Football Australia CEO Ahead of Women's Asian Cup

Posted : 08 May 2025

James Johnson has resigned as Football Australia’s chief executive after a significant five-and-a-half-year tenure, during which he played a pivotal role in securing the 2023 Women's World Cup for the country.

His resignation comes as a surprise, especially with the Women's Asian Cup less than a year away, raising questions about the timing of the decision. Heather Garriock, a former Matildas player, has been appointed as the interim chief executive.

In his resignation statement, Johnson expressed that stepping down was a difficult decision, noting his deep passion for Australian football.

Despite the personal challenge, he felt it was the right time to move on. Football Australia acknowledged his leadership, particularly his role in steering the organization through the challenges of the Covid pandemic.

Under Johnson’s leadership, Football Australia successfully bid to co-host the 2023 Women’s World Cup, a tournament that concluded with Spain’s victory and was widely celebrated for its success both on and off the field.

Football Australia chairman Anter Isaac praised Johnson’s legacy, highlighting his ability to guide the organization through extraordinary challenges and solidify a lasting impact on the sport in the country.
