Jamaica and India Announce National Squads Ahead of Potential Defending Champions Clash

Posted : 22 May 2026

The Jamaica Football Federation and the All India Football Federation have officially announced their national squads for the upcoming 2026 Unity Cup. The four-nation international tournament is scheduled to take place at The Valley stadium in London from May 26 to May 30. The competitive structure features two high-stakes knockout fixtures; the eventual winners will advance directly to the tournament final. This format creates a potential path for either nation to challenge the reigning champions, Nigeria, if the Super Eagles overcome Zimbabwe.

Jamaica confirmed a balanced 24-man traveling roster via an official social media statement on Thursday evening. The selected group features a strong mix of English Premier League quality, Championship grit, and hungry domestic league players. The Reggae Boyz squad includes regular international figures alongside highly rated young forward Kaheim Dixon, who currently plays for Charlton Athletic. Derby County striker Dajaune Brown also earned a senior call-up following an impressive domestic loan spell at Port Vale. Jamaica enters the competition determined to improve on their second-place finish from the 2025 tournament.

India head coach Khalid Jamil countered by naming an extensive 28-man preliminary squad following the conclusion of the domestic league season. The initial selection features elite experienced internationals; veteran goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu and rock-solid defender Sandesh Jhingan anchor the defensive line. Creative midfielder Anirudh Thapa and forward Lallianzuala Chhangte will guide the team's offensive transitions during the tournament. The Indian contingent will assemble for a short training camp in Bengaluru before reducing the travel roster to twenty-three players. The final traveling squad will depart for the United Kingdom on May 24.

The upcoming fixture holds massive competitive weight for India as they seek vital international exposure against superior opposition. Coach Khalid Jamil noted that playing against highly ranked teams will build confidence and help his players improve their overall standards. India currently sits 136th in the official FIFA global rankings; Jamaica occupies the 71st position, while defending champions Nigeria are ranked 26th globally. The Blue Tigers will face the Reggae Boyz in the second semifinal match on May 27, just twenty-four hours after the tournament opener between Nigeria and Zimbabwe.
