Jack Grealish’s return to Everton this summer was greeted with considerable excitement, as supporters welcomed back a player who had quickly become a popular figure during his first loan spell at the club.
The England international’s previous season on loan from Manchester City was brought to an early end by a serious foot injury. However, his performances and personality had made a strong impression on the Everton faithful, creating optimism when he returned to Merseyside for another campaign.
His latest move also carried significant importance for manager David Moyes, who was left with limited senior options following a difficult transfer window. For Grealish, the loan offered an opportunity to revive his career after falling out of favour at Manchester City.
That opportunity has now encountered a major setback. Everton left the 31-year-old out of their squad for Thursday’s Carabao Cup encounter with Newcastle United, publicly confirming that his absence was due to a breach of club discipline.
The incident reportedly involved Grealish missing a scheduled training session on Monday without permission. The decision to exclude him was taken by the club's hierarchy, with Moyes backing the disciplinary action.
The development has raised fresh questions about the winger’s future and his ability to establish himself again at the highest level. Having joined Manchester City from Aston Villa for £100 million in 2021, Grealish now faces pressure to demonstrate that he can still deliver consistently.
Everton are not believed to view the incident as the end of his time at the club. With a relatively small squad available, Moyes cannot afford to lose a player with Grealish’s creative qualities. Nevertheless, the England international will need to restore the confidence of his manager, teammates and supporters.
Moyes refused to reveal further details when questioned after Everton’s 3-1 victory over Newcastle, but made his support for the club’s decision clear. He also praised his players for maintaining their focus and delivering a strong performance despite the winger’s absence.
Everton’s victory secured a place in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals, where they will face League Two side Fleetwood Town. The prospect of progressing further in the competition gives the club another important objective, making squad unity and discipline particularly significant.
Grealish has previously enjoyed a positive relationship with Moyes and was warmly received during his initial spell at Everton. His performances before suffering the foot injury helped him become a fan favourite, but his latest disciplinary issue has complicated the task of rebuilding his standing.
The winger has returned to training following the unauthorised absence and is reportedly expected to face a financial penalty. He must now respond positively and convince Everton that he remains fully committed to the club’s ambitions.
