2025/2026 NPFL Matchday 21 Review: Iwundu’s Late Heroics Give Rangers Victory in Oriental Derby

Rangers International FC left it late but made it count in the Oriental derby, as Chidozie Iwundu’s stoppage-time strike secured a dramatic 2–1 victory over Kun Khalifat FC on Matchday 21 of the 2025/2026 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

The Dan Anyiam Stadium hosted a pulsating encounter, with Rangers’ goal-scoring centre-back once again stepping up to deliver when it mattered most.

First-Half Control, Iwundu Strikes Again

Rangers dominated the first half and were rewarded three minutes before the break. Chidozie Iwundu rose highest to convert his sixth league goal of the season, giving the eight-time champions a deserved 1–0 lead at halftime.

The goal highlighted Rangers’ authority in the opening period and continued Iwundu’s remarkable scoring campaign—impressive numbers for a central defender.

 

Late Twist and Dramatic Finish

Just as Rangers seemed poised for a routine away win, Kun Khalifat struck late. James Ekebuike scored the equaliser in the 87th minute, igniting hopes of a point for the struggling hosts and threatening to frustrate the Flying Antelopes.

However, Rangers were not finished.

Deep into stoppage time, in the 96th minute, Iwundu scored again—this time delivering a decisive winner to silence the home crowd and secure all three points.

 

Iwundu: Defender Turned Goal Machine

The brace takes Chidozie Iwundu’s tally to seven league goals, making him:

  • Rangers’ leading scorer
  • The NPFL’s second-highest goalscorer overall
  • The league’s highest-scoring defender

The former Sunshine Stars man has emerged as one of the standout revelations of the season, combining defensive solidity with a consistent and decisive attacking presence.

Table Implications

The win lifts Rangers International to eighth place on the NPFL table with 33 points, keeping them in the chase alongside Rivers United, Abia Warriors, Ikorodu City, and Nasarawa United. It was also only their second away win of the season, with nine points now collected from 11 road fixtures.

For Kun Khalifat FC, the defeat deepens their troubles. They remain at the bottom of the table with 18 points, intensifying their battle for survival in the league.
